“Macedonia’s” Journalist Association strongly condemned the physical attack on the journalist and editor of the local weekly trivia magazine Krema, Zoran Vasilevski.

This is yet another proof showing to what extent “Macedonia’s” society has fallen into darkness. Journalists here are continuously being treated as gun fodder,” the head of the journalists’ association Robert Popovski told media.

Zoran Vasilevski was attacked on Tuesday around midnight when he stepped out of his car on his way home. Two masked people carrying metal poles approached him and started beating him, the police said yesterday.

Vaslievski was admitted to hospital with head and body injuries. He was later released.

“We will see whether he knows the two attackers. We want to solve this case as soon as possible, because violence is not to be tolerated,” Interior Minister Gordan Jankuloska told media.

“Macedonia’s” Journalist Association is urging the police to complete its investigation and submit criminal charges against the perpetrators. It says the state institutions should react as fast as they do when journalists are being charged with slander.

Endangering the journalist’s life and health is unacceptable in a society that strives to become part of civilized Europe, the Association added.
