AIANI, Greece - Mycenean graves were brought to light during an archaeological excavation, which take place in the necropolis of Aiani, Macedonia, Greece. The exciting finding proves, according to the archaeologists, the common culture during the Bronze Age, which was extended in the entirety of the Helladic mainland. “Until now, we have tracked down more than 20 sites with Mycenean findings in the prefecture of Kozani. They stand as undeniable witnesses that Macedonia had been inhabited from people who had common cultural and social elements with these of the rest of Greece. Namely, they were part of it“, said Georgia Karamitrou-Mendesidi, Director of Antiquities in Aiani.

The land of Aiani is inexhaustible and it reveals each year, unique and rare findings.

Greek archaeologists had uncovered 25 burials of the Archaic and Classical Ages. Finds of great significance include vessels, statuettes, among them a  pottery statuette with legs which are not saved intact and red colour in its chest and lips.  Also a stele was excavated which had the name ΚΛΕΤΑΓΟΡΗ, printed in Greek characters.  “The land of Aiani is inexhaustible and  it reveals each year, unique and rare findings“, added Mrs Karamitrou-Mentesidi.

The Director of the 30th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquitites, Georgia Karamitrou-Mentesidi will provide a full report of the excavations in the Necropoli of Aiani on Thursday, during the 23rd Scientific Meeting for the Archaeological Research in Macedonia and Thrace. The event will take place at the building of the old Philosophy school of AUTh (Aristotle University of Thessalonica)
