The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea. The War was greatly expanded when the United Nations, led by the United States, and later China entered the conflict. The conflict ended when a cease-fire was reached on July 27, 1953.

The Greek Expeditionary was formed in response to the United Nations appeal for assistance in the Korean War. It comprised a reinforced Army infantry battalion (2,163 Officers and men) and a RHAF Flight of 9 C-47 “Dakotas” (65 Officers and Technical crew).

The Greeks fought the Chinese and the N.Koreans in a series of battles. 186 Greeks, never returned home.

The Greeks won six U.S. Distinguished Service Crosses, 32 Silver Stars, 110 Bronze Star Medals. 19 members of the Royal Hellenic Air Force 13th Flight received the U.S. Air Force Air Medal for the evacuation of US Marines at Hagaru-ri in December 1950.
