former yugoslav republic of macedonia2 MoEP Jelko Kacin accuses VMRO DPMNE of wanting to keep the media silent and prevent them from working democratically

“The freedom of the media is a precondition for democracy and entering the EU family. What took place in Skopje is a display of the firm hands of the ruling party which wants to keep the media silent and prevent them from working democratically,” stated MoEP Jelko Kacin.

The Member of European Parliament mentioned that the country risks losing the EC support for start of accession negotiations and added, “Only those ruling parties which allow the media to see their work in the mirror and have a reflection of their work can make a progress, while the annulment of the media pluralism is a step backwards. “

Regarding whethe the problem had to do with the investigation of the financial irregularities, he stated “The problem is that journalists were not allowed to enter and that their work was prevented. That is everything but democracy,”
