Merkel to Gruevski : Resolve the Name Issue otherwise no opening of negotiations with EU and NATO
Berlin – German Chancellor Angela Merkel met today with FYROM’s PM Nikola Gruevski. Besides bilateral cooperation in the focus of discussion were the FYROM’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations. According to today’s Dnevnik, before the meeting FYROM’s officials considered very important for Germany to assess whether it should push for the initiative for FYROM’s membership of NATO under the reference of FYROM.
However, Merkel urged Greece and FYROM to reach a compromise over their long-standing name dispute. The name issue has to be settled,’ she stated. ‘That is why I would definitely keep negotiating with Greece and trying to find a solution. In the European Union we are all used to making compromises. Otherwise the EU would never survive.’
According to FYROM’s section of Deutsche Welle, Merkel stated, “The name issue must be resolved, otherwise I do not think it would be possible opening of negotiations with EU and NATO membership.”
In the meantime, speaking after talks with Merkel in Berlin, FYROM’s PM Nikola Gruevski said that Skopje would request admission to the NATO alliance at the alliance’s summit in Chicago in May.
Greece and FYROM have been tangled in an ongoing dispute regarding the latter’s name, after FYROM’s Slavs absurdly keep claiming the Name, history and heritage of ancient Macedonia, an ancient Greek kingdom in Macedonia, Greece.
