1. Skopjans hypocritically, showing their real racist face, tend occasionally to use the term ”Turks” as a derogatory remark against Greeks. However they conveniently forget:
Fact:
(1) Athens was captured from Ottoman Turks in 1458 and the city was liberated in 1821.
(2) Skopje was captured from Ottoman turks in 1392 and the city was liberated in 1912.
(3) Thessaloniki was captured from Ottoman turks in 1430 and the city was liberated in 1912.
(4) Trapezounta was captured from Ottoman turks in 1461, and the Pontian refugees migrated to Greece in 1923.
Therefore,
Skopje was under Turkish yoke for 520 years.
Athens was under Turkish yoke for 363.
Thessaloniki was under Turkish yoke for 480 years.
Pontian refugees were under Turkish yoke for 462 years before they came to Greece.
Conclusion:
Skopje was under Turkey for:
157 years MORE than Athens.
40 years MORE than Thessaloniki.
58 years MORE than the Pontian refugees.
2. Skopjans hypocritically, showing their real racist face, tend occasionally to use the term ”Prosfygi” or “Christian Turks“ as a derogatory remark against Pontian Greeks who settled in Greece. However they conveniently forget:
Fact:
In the aftermath of Ottoman conquests, the city of Skopje and generally lands of modern FYROM, were subjected to a systematic massive colonization of Ottomans and other Turkic tribes from which a great chunk of today’s FYROM population is originating from, since many of them were christianised (the rest originates from Bulgarian and Slavic settlers)

3. Skopjans hypocritically, tend occasionally to use the claim that “Greek state renamed in 1900s all Slavic placenames in Macedonia, Greece”. However they conveniently forget:
Fact:
The renaming or, more precisely, the Hellenization, of the majority of toponyms is indicative of the process of homogenization attempted by the Greek state in the context of the modernization of the region and more generally the country. In fact Greek state succeed to restore original ancient Greek placenames found in classical geographical texts. On the other hand its highly hypocritical, Slavs, the same people who initially renamed ALL the original ancient Macedonian/Paeonian/Dardanian placenames to cry for the same thing they…initially did themselves.
For example,
1. Skopje
Even skopje its a changed name since it was originally founded by Dardanians as Skupi.
2. Debar
Another changed name. The first recorded document mentioning Debar is the map of Ptolemy, dating around the middle of the 2nd century, in which it is called Deborus.
3. Delcevo
Wikipedia says during Ottoman times it was called “Sultania” or “Sultaniye” and later Carevo Selo. The town was renamed its present name Delčevo in 1950.
4. Kavadarci
The name Kavadarci is derived from the Greek word, “Kavadion” which means “cape made from a valuable material”. The citizens of Kavadarci being manufacturers of this material, the first recorded use of this name was during the first half of the 19th Century.
5. Kicevo
The original ancient Illyriann name was Uskana . The town belonged to the Illyrian Penestae who inhabited the valley of the Treska/Velcka river and was mentioned for first time in the reign of Perseas, king of Macedon during the Third Macedonian War (171-169 BC). Another ancient name changed by Slavs.
6. Negotino
Negotino was known under the name of Antigoneia. It was founded by the Macedonian king Antigonus II Gonatas, in the period between 278–242 BC.
7. Gostivar
From wikipedia: “Possibly the first mention of the town was made by the Roman historian Livy. He records how during the Third Macedonian War the King of Macedon Perseus at the head of 10000 men, after taking Uskana (Kicevo), attacked Drau-Dak, today Gostivar.
8. Ochrid
Wiki: Historical names include Dassarites , land of the Dexaroi - was, in the view of Hammond an Epirot group a constituent sub-tribe of the Chaones. It was, however. the area of Epirus most subject to Illyrian pressure and was probably heavily affected by the latter. and the Greek names Lychnidos (Λύχνιδος), Ochrida (Οχρίδα) and Achrida (Αχρίδα), the latter two of which are still in modern usage.
9. Valandovo
Wiki: Evidence of life can be found beginning in the 10th-7th centuries B.C. There is a settlement known as Mal Konstantinopol (Small Constantinople) dating from Roman times, and the life in the Middle Ages is marked by Marco’s Tower. In the vicinity of the town there are also two very important archeological sites – The Isar Marvinci and the knowledge experts have on the existence of the ancient city Idomene.
10. Prilep
The site of the ancient Keramiai - a Pelagonian (and therefore Greek-speaking) town. The plain in which it dominates was known as the Keramesian Plain (Prilepsko Pole in Slavic). It was the northern part of the Pelagonian plain - the southern part, dominated by Heracleia Lynkestis/Bitola is known in Slavic as Bitolsko Pole.
11. Demi Hisar
It was known as SideroKastron when Greeks lived there. Later in Ottomantimes, the name was changed in to ”Demir Hisar” which in their language means ‘’ Iron Mountain’’. Another original greek toponymy renamed.
12. Demir-Kapija
Demir-Kapija is a place already mentioned in Classical times under the name of Stenae (Greek for gorge). In the Middle Ages it was known as a Slav settlement, under the name of Prosek, while today’s name originates from the Turkish reign, meaning “The Iron Gate”.
13. Štip
Originally an ancient Macedonian city called astibo which was renamed later to Štip.
14. Stroumica
Wiki: The town is first mentioned in II century B.C. with the name Astrayon. Later it is known by the name Tiveriopol. It got it’s present name from the slovan settlers.
15. Cepigovo
The ancient Styberra was renamed by Slavs as Cepigovo.
16. Bučin
The ancient Alkomena. Alkomena used to be one of the urban centres of Derriopos.
17. Gevgelija
The ancient Gortynia renamed into Gevgelija.
18. Titov Veles
It was known in antiquity as Bylazora.
19. Isar-Marvinci
There stood during antiquity according to archaeologists the ancient Idomenai.
20 Vardar
The ancient Bardarios was renamed in Slavic as Vardar.
21. Crna
The ancient Erigon renamed into the Slavic Crna.

The peoples of the Balkan peninsula according to Leon Trotsky. Not any mention of <Macedonian> ethnicity.

The real ethnic character of the <Macedonians> :Pure Bulgarians.

The alleged <Macedonian> minority of <Aegean Macedonia> was consisted in 1913 of 200.000 Bulgarians.

The tactics of the Bulgarians of VMRO were ineffective:Vardarska Banovina,a Bulgarian territory according to Trotsky became Serbian soil.

L’empire de Turquie,by Xavier Heuschling,1860

All the Balkan peoples that were residing in the Ottoman empire and their numbers. There are mentioned Bulgarians, Serbs, Bosnians, Herzegovinians e.t.c,other Slavic branches, Vlachs and Moldovlachs, Albanians, Ottomans of Asiatic origin,Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Gypsies (Bohemians) and Tatars, except the <Macedonians>.

The Slavic race includes the Bulgarians, the Serbs, the Bosnians, the Herzegovinians e.t.c.

<In 980 the Bulgarians established in Macedonia the 2nd Bulgarian kingdom….The Bulgarians inhabit the biggest part of Roumelia and Macedonia…>

Serbs,Bulgarians,Bosnians,Croatians,Herzegovinians and Montenegrins but not any <Macedonians>

The Slavic languages are those of the Serbs, the Bulgarians, the Bosnians and the Herzegovinians

The Herzegovinians and the Montenegrians speak a language almost similar to the Serbian, the Croatians speak a dialect quite different from the Serbian,a few Greeks speak Slavic,a few Bulgarians and less Serbs speak Greek. No one of all the above people speaks something like <Makedonski>

<The biggest part of the Bulgarians and the Greeks in Thrace and Macedonia understand the Turkish language >

In Athos mountain someone can find monks of Greek,Russian,Bulgarian,Serbian and Moldavian origin, but not any <Macedonian> monks. So in these monasteries in Macedonia were monks from all the Orthodox nations except the …<Makedonski>

Count Nikolay Pavlovich Ignatieff: The man responsible for the beginning of the ‘Macedonian Question’ that we are seeing today.
The following is from pg. 27 of the book ‘ ‘Macedonian Things’ and ‘Irredentist Things’ ‘ by Chysostomos Papastavros, published in 2008 by the Local Community of Mavrochorio, Kastoria. It is a table of the 4 Irredentist Pan-Slavic Plans for Greece. Throughout history, and with Russian backing, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and now FYROM have each had their agendas for Macedonia.

I. 1453 - 1821: The Greek Peninsula is under the Ottoman Turk Rule. Constantinople or ‘Second Rome’ falls to the Turks. Russia tries to help the Greeks for her own interests to get to the Aegean. It presents itself as the ‘Third Rome’ and self declares as the protector and new leader of Orthodox Christianity. Once Greece declares independence and asks for support from France and Great Britain, Russia turns to the Bulgarians to achieve the goal of getting to the Aegean.
II. 1878 - 1908: Russian ambassador to the Sublime Porte, Count Nikolay Pavlovich Ignatieff, gets orders from the Russian Tsar to create the Bulgarian Exarchy, and raise the Bulgarian population in Macedonia. All this to force Turkey to cede the Southern Balkans to Bulgaria. The Treaty of San Stefano tried to achieve this under the false pretence that the majority of the population in Macedonia was Bulgarian and not Greek. Europe did not allow this to happen. The Bulgarian and Greek Struggle for Macedonia begins and ends with the complete retreat of Bulgaria from Greek soil. In 1912, Macedonia is freed from Turkey and declares unity with Greece.
III. 1917 - 1942: Bulgaria supports Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany and expects to get Macedonia as reward. Bulgaria again occupies northern Greece during both World Wars. Once the Axis falls, Russia again tries to get to the Aegean through Communism with an idea for a Communist Balkan Alliance or ‘Switzerland of the Balkans’ called ‘Macedonia’.
IV. 1943 - Present: Russian leader Stalin, with Yugoslav leader Tito create ‘The People’s Republic of Macedonia’ out of Vardarska Banovina in South Yugoslavia and support Greek communist guerillas in Greek Macedonia. They abduct 28 000 Greek children to re-educate them and use them as fighters against Greece. The Greek Civil War ends with the communist defeat. Many Greek and Yugoslav fighters flee into the Iron Curtain and take their families with them. OFFICIAL COMMUNIST-SPONSORED AND (SINCE 1991 WHEN YUGOSLAVIA BREAKS UP) NATIONALIST MACEDONISM CONTINUES
The Times of London Intelligence Reports on The Preliminary Treaty of San Stefano (February 19, March 9, and March 23, 1878). It is very clear from these reports that Great Britain DID NOT agree with the idea of a Greater Bulgaria and points out all the Russian and Bulgarian plans for Greece. THE IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE IS THAT THERE WERE NO ‘ETHNIC’ MACEDONIANS REFERRED TO ANYWHERE!!! It is clear that the population of the region of Macedonia was Greek, Bulgarian, Turk, and Albanian.

One of the most known websites from FYROM, namely MIA, suprised us in a decent way when in today’s article “Police seizes valuable artifacts“, recognizes the greekness of ancient Macedonians by mentioning the ancient artifacts derived from “Hellenic and Roman period“. Too bad the bulk of FYROM’s population are still staying into a continuous denial of the overwhelming evidence from ancient sources which point out explicitely the Greekness of ancient Macedonians. However its a good start!

COMMENTARY:
With the attention of Euro-Atlantic diplomats understandably focused on cooling the conflict in the Caucasus, the United States must not forget that much work remains to be done to address tensions elsewhere in the mountains of Southeastern Europe.
Enhancing and preserving the hard-won stability of the Balkans requires that Washington not become complacent about remaining irredentist agendas in this complex region. This should be Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s focus when she is in New York this week at the convening of the United Nations General Assembly with the foreign ministers of Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
In 1944, Secretary of State Edward Stettinius expressed concerns about Yugoslavian communist leader Josip Broz Tito creating a “Macedonian” province and consciousness among his people. Stettinius saw the destructive potential in Tito’s choice of a name describing an ancient geographical area, 52 percent of which is located in modern Greece, 9 percent in Bulgaria and 39 percent in Yugoslavia. His description of Tito’s actions as “a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece” manifested years later when Tito’s “Macedonians” crossed into Greece as participants in Greece’s anti-communist civil war (1946-49).
Nearly half a century later, that Yugoslavian province became an independent nation in 1991 identified by the United Nations and internationally as the “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” or “FYROM.” Yet Tito’s furtive aims live on in many ways, including the nation’s pursuit of the name “Macedonia.” Its new constitution called on all “Macedonians” in neighboring countries to rise up and unite. In addition, FYROM printed currency featuring the White Tower of Salonika (Thessaloniki), Greece, and created a flag featuring the Macedonian symbol from the dynasty of Philip of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great, which was located in Greece.
Years of productive U.S. and U.N. diplomacy moved FYROM to drop the offending language from its constitution and symbols from its currency and flag. Many believed FYROM was moving toward adopting a name such as “North Macedonia” or “Upper Macedonia” which appropriately describes its own geography.
However in 2004, the administration disregarded possible long-term consequences and focused exclusively on short-term intra-FYROM political goals. It split from U.N., NATO and EU policies to recognize FYROM as the “Republic of Macedonia” in a misguided attempt to provide cover to Western-oriented leaders in an intensely nationalistic political environment. This sudden about-face undermined international efforts to solve the name issue, and emboldened those within FYROM opposed to a diplomatic solution.
Shortly thereafter, a videotape surfaced showing FYROM’s state schools teaching that northern Greece is FYROM territory occupied by Greece. Maps showing northern Greece as part of FYROM also appeared in school textbooks and one was recently displayed behind Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at a ceremony. Most recently the political leadership in Skopje launched an unprecedented campaign of claims against Greece, thus undermining the ongoing talks under United Nations auspices.
Due to FYROM’s intransigence on the name dispute, it was prohibited from joining NATO at the group’s April summit, thus thwarting American security interests. In Bucharest, NATO leaders unanimously decided that an invitation to FYROM will be extended as soon as a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue has been reached. In breaking with the international community on FYROM’s name and failing to condemn its provocations, the U.S. administration bolstered FYROM’s intransigence and inadvertently contributed to the deadlock in NATO.
To correct this, we recently requested clarification on the administration’s position on this issue. The State Department responded with a letter that stated, “Our ambassador [to FYROM] will, as well, help these leaders understand the dangers of irredentism in any form and the importance of avoiding the implications of irredentism in any form.”
From our perspective, this was an improvement on the U.S. position. Yet when this language from the letter was recently read aloud at a State Department briefing, the department’s spokesman indicated its position on the issue had not changed. We strongly believe it would be an error to eschew progress on this issue at the very moment it is most required.
Miss Rice has an ideal opportunity in New York to demonstrate America’s opposition to any form of irredentism in FYROM and resolve the question of accession to NATO. She can tell FYROM that unless it accepts an international name that describes only its territory, such as “North” or “Upper” Macedonia, to be also used in the bilateral relations with the United States, by a time certain, the U.S. will withdraw bilateral recognition of FYROM as “Republic of Macedonia.”
She can thus regenerate the American pressure necessary to resolve the problem, avoid sowing the seeds of another potential conflict in Europe and open the door for FYROM’s accession to the European Union and NATO. This requires engagement, leadership and proactive diplomacy. Such a solution will have bipartisan support in the Congress.
Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, and Olympia J. Snowe, a Maine Republican, are members of the United States Senate.

Nationalists from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M) and her diaspora allege that there is a cultural, linguistic and genealogical continuity between the ancient Macedonians and the “modern Macedonian” nation. Until the recent past these claims were usually confined to radical nationalists circles in F.Y.R.O.M and her diaspora. With Gruevski’s administration now leading F.Y.R.O.M the claims involving a relationship between F.Y.R.O.M and ancient Macedonia are being promoted and encouraged at the official state level.
No credible and objective historian or social scientist relates the modern “Macedonian nation” to ancient Macedonia. Any credible authority on the history of the region knows how ridiculous the state sponsored myths involving relationships between F.Y.R.O.M and ancient Macedonia are.
Eugene Borza is one of the most frequently cited historians on F.Y.R.O.M nationalist websites (see historyofmacedonia.org as an example). His views on ancient Macedonia are quoted ad infinitum because Borza is skeptical of whether the ancient Macedonians of the 4th century BC could be classified as ancient Greeks. Nationalists from F.Y.R.O.M and her diaspora completely ignore Borza’s position that the ancient Macedonians were fully Hellenized by Roman times. They also completely disregard Borza’s assertion that “modern Macedonians” have no relationship to ancient Macedonia.
This is Borza’s position on F.Y.R.O.M’s modern history:

Note: Borza makes no mention of a “Macedonian” ethnicity in his description of Macedonia’s pre 20th century demograpics.

Note: Borza states that the region of Macedonia was an ethnic quagmire. This is a far cry from the F.Y.R.O.M nationalist claim that “Macedonia” was populated in the vast majority by “ethnic Macedonians”.

Note: Borza claims that only the most radical Slavic factions, mostly found in F.Y.R.O.M’s diaspora, make claims of a relationship to ancient Macedonia. Keep in mind that Borza wrote this article a few years before the Gruevski administration took power in F.Y.R.O.M. Even Borza, who is one of the favorite historians of F.Y.R.O.M nationalists, would classify Gruevski’s ideology as radical!

Note: Borza states that the “Macedonians” are a new ethno/national group that have no history and as a result must construct one.

In light of the fact that the modern “Macedonian” ethno/national identity is a mid to late 19th century construct, and in light of the fact that no credible historian or social scientist supports the notion of any cultural or genealogical lineage between ancient Macedonia and the modern “Macedonian” nation, it seems absurd and comical that the Gruevski government is claiming a relationship between the Slavs of F.Y.R.O.M and the ancient Macedonians.
Gruevski’s desperate attempts at promoting a relationship between the modern “Macedonian nation” and ancient Macedonia are evidenced by his bizarre and now ridiculed official state meeting with the leader of the Pakistani Hunza tribe. The Hunza claim that they are the remnants of Alexander’s ancient Macedonian army that traversed through Pakistan.
The following picture is of Gruevski meeting with what the F.Y.R.O.M government advertises as the long lost kin of the Slavic inhabitants of F.Y.R.O.M.

This visit was ridiculed and criticized by international media as is described by the following article from the Financial Times. The history being promoted by the Gruevski administration, and F.Y.R.O.M’s cultural institutions, in the context of the year 2008, makes his government look like amateur radicals promoting an 19th century nation building ideology based on ancient lineages. No credible and objective historian or social scientist substantiates this mythical relationship.
