ModernHistory1 1669 Monk Robert De Dreux: Thessalonike is one of the most famous cities of Macedonia and All of Greece

Robert de Dreux was a Theologist and Monk. He was a member of the French embassy in Constantinoupolis when the French ambassador was Haye Vantelet. Robert de Dreux, as a member of a large delegation, accompanied the French ambassador at his trip from Constantinoupolis to Larissa (1668 -1669). The mission remained 1 1/2 day in thessalonike where Robert de Dreux found the opportunity to make a tour in the city. After his return to France he described his numerous travels and the manuscript exists in the National Library of France. His account about Thessalonike starts with:

“While leaving from the village Baicui, we arrived in two days in Thessalonike, which is one of the most beautiful and famous cities of Macedonia and all of Greece. Thessalonike is built in the corner of the homonymous gulf and she is surrounded by beautiful walls. From the sea’s side, she is being defended by huge towers.”
