Eight drachma bronze coin. Alexander I
This is an authentic Greek museum replica coin in diameter: 7,5 cm (2.95 inches)

See this coin here… http://museumreplicas.gr/product_info.php/eight-d

On the obverse side is a young horseman looking to the right, wearing a chlamys (a short riding cloak), a broad brimmed Macedonian hat and a diadem. He holds two spears in his right hand. A dog is depicted on the ground beneath the horse. The entire scene is surrounded by a circle of small raised dots. This coin is a typical example of the transition from Archaic to Classical coinages.

On the reverse side is a square, divided into four smaller squares. Around the large square the inscription ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΣ (Alexander), meaning Alexander I, King of ancient Greek Macedonia and ancestor of Alexander III the Great. Alexander I took part in the Olympic Games as an athlete, as did all the later Macedonian Kings. All his successors shared his conviction that the royal house of Macedon was descended from the demi-god Hercules.
